Cabbage can cause gas and bloating in some people, particularly those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or a sensitive digestive system.
Certain carbohydrates and fibers are fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas. In people with IBS, this can contribute to bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, or constipation.
Interestingly, the amount and preparation can matter. Monash University notes that ordinary cabbage can be low in
FODMAPs at certain
serving sizes, while fermented cabbage such as sauerkraut can have a different FODMAP profile.
If cabbage repeatedly causes discomfort, reducing the portion size or discussing dietary triggers with a dietitian may be more appropriate than eliminating vegetables altogether.
3. People Taking Warfarin
Cabbage contains vitamin K, a nutrient involved in normal blood clotting.
