Motorcycle greeting: what does the gesture of lowering two fingers mean?
Anyone who regularly travels the roads and boulevards has probably seen this scene: two motorcyclists pass each other, raising their arms almost simultaneously and forming a “V” with their fingers. To the untrained eye, it might seem like a simple greeting between motorcycle enthusiasts. Yet, behind this seemingly innocent gesture lies a story rich in symbolism, respect, and camaraderie.
A silent code between strangers.
Imagine the scene: you’re driving along a quiet road, the window slightly open, soft music playing in the background. Suddenly, two motorcyclists overtake you and make this characteristic gesture: two fingers pointed towards the ground, forming an inverted “V”. You might wonder where this custom comes from. Is it a deeply rooted tradition? A knowing wink between initiates? Or perhaps a secret language reserved for bikers?
The answer is deeper than it seems. This small gesture is much more than a simple greeting: it symbolizes belonging
to a close-knit, almost fraternal community. It’s a form of mutual recognition, comparable to a military salute, but with helmets and leather jackets.
In the film “The Origin: The Legend of Ba,” this salute has become so common today that many bikers perform it automatically, almost reflexively. Crossing another biker’s legs and showing two fingers is enough to convey a clear and strong message, without a word:
“I see you”: instantly recognizing another person on the road.
“I respect you”: a way of respecting someone who shares the same lifestyle.

“We belong to the same community”: a silent declaration of brotherhood.
“Drive carefully”: a sincere wish to travel safely.
In addition, some interpret the two fingers pointing towards the asphalt as symbols of the two wheels of a motorcycle or as the wish that the two wheels always remain in contact with the ground, i.e. that
the motorcyclist arrives at his destination safely.
