An old-fashioned pencil sharpener is a mechanical device used to sharpen pencils. Unlike modern, small, handheld pencil sharpeners, the classic pencil sharpener was often large, made of metal, and designed to last for many years. Many people remember these pencil sharpeners from school, the office, or of course, grandma’s house.
How did the pencil sharpener work?
The traditional pencil sharpener had a rotating mechanism. You inserted the pencil into the opening, turned a crank, and inside, metal blades sharpened the pencil evenly. This gave a sharp point and a smooth surface without the pencil breaking easily. It was a combination of simplicity, strength, and durability.
